Or
Shalom means "light
of peace."
We are a community of Jewish and non-Jewish adults and families who are
interested in the precepts of Judaism. Our membership includes a
variety of family structures. Together, we have created a warm setting
in which to celebrate and learn about our faith, traditions and
challenges of our heritage.
Or
Shalom has always been different from
other congregations in the Bay Area. We are proud that Or Shalom is an
independent, liberal congregation involving people from diverse
backgrounds and family structures.
Interfaith families make up a significant part of our membership, and
the reason is that we welcome everyone who comes to us because we have
built a congregation that is progressive, non-dogmatic, and yet, haimish.
Men
and women participate equally in all
aspects of our community. Our programs reflect the importance of Tikkun
Olam (improving the world)
and Tzedakah
(acts of charity).
We
have a wonderful staff in place who
provide our programming, the education of our children and adults, and
a smooth coordinated administration.
Music
is very important at Or Shalom, in
services and in our school. We are very proud of our Choir and Youth
Band.
We
are housed within a wonderful space
in an existing Jewish synagogue in San Francisco. We have a beautiful
sanctuary, social hall, large commercial size kitchen facility, office
space and schoolrooms.
