Committees and Groups

Avodah (Social Action) - This group gathers to plan community-wide social action as well as connecting our members to individual social action opportunities.  At each gathering, we learn about how Jewish tradition grounds our action, and we share stories of hope that inspire us in our work.

Board of Trustees - Our board is small and friendly and effective.  They meet once a month to work out the nuts and bolts of making Or Shalom thrive.  Our board is dedicated and passionate and they want very much to hear from you about how to make Or Shalom into the spiritual community you want it to be.

Book Club - This group meets monthly to discuss books of Jewish interest, and of course, to eat!  Contact our office to sign up at admin@orshalom.org.

Chesed Committee - When an Or Shalom member is in need, the chesed committee is there to care, providing food, running errands, and providing companionship.   Keep your eyes open for our occasional cooking parties when we stock up for future need!

Choir and Instrumental Group - Many of our services are enhanced by musical offerings from our choir and instrumental team. For more information about the choir please contact our musical director David Cohen Tzedek at music@orshalom.org.

Finance Committee - This group of members keeps a close eye on our community's fiscal health and well-being.

LeDor VaDor B’nai Mitzvah Family Cohort - During the year leading up to a child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony, the whole family is invited to come to monthly gatherings where we learn and explore together about the meaning of coming of age in the Jewish community.  Themes include community service, Shabbat, and interfaith dynamics.  This group is a great way to meet friends and make this life milestone much more meaningful.

Membership Committee - This group is dedicated to both inreach and outreach – creating new events and programs that connect Or Shalom members to each other, and widening our circles to include new faces.  We are currently seeking additional members for this committee, please contact Rabbi Katie if you are interested.

Minhag Committee (Spiritual Practices) - This group of members, along with the rabbi and music director, is a forum for discussion and feedback about Or Shalom’s spiritual practices and customs, a think tank in which to develop policy recommendations, and a practical working group through which to organize services, community celebrations and music.

The News Minyan - Rather than working from a Jewish text and building the bridge to current events, this group does just the opposite.  Using the tools of contemplative listening practice, we share with one another the ways that the events of our time have impacted our lives.  Then, we focus in on Jewish texts that shine light on these contemporary issues.  Contact the office for more information.

Religious School Committee - As its name implies, this group guides the religious school.  It includes members with kids in the school, as well as others with a passion for the Jewish education of our next generation.  Please contact our education director, Deborah if you are interested in joining this committee.

Teen Havurah - Our teens gather to learn, connect, and travel together in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.  Activities include trips and our current documentary film project. See Teen Havurah.

Traveling Shabbat: Join or host a Shabbat dinner in your neighborhood though our geographically-based Shabbat hospitality network.  Contact our office to sign up at admin@orshalom.org.
