What is the Nachshon Collective?
Nachshon Collective is a group for self-identified “young adults” in San Francisco, based out of Or Shalom Jewish Community, coming together to explore and build out vibrant Jewish communities beyond Zionism.

We get our name from the character of Nachson ben Aminadav, who, according to midrashic retellings of the Exodus story, walked directly into the unparted sea while the rest of the Israelites stood on the shore, afraid. It was only by and through Nachson’s act of bravery and trust, venturing into unknown waters with no guarantee of a future, that the sea parted. It was only due to Nachson’s act that the people of Israel were able to survive, self-determine, fall short, disperse, evolve, become.

In a time of deep rupture within the American Jewish community after which Judaism will never be the same, we are committing ourselves to the emulation of Nachson. We believe that vibrant, liberatory Judaism for all is possible. We seek collective wisdom from the groups and generations before us for inspiration on how to move forward. While we dont know exactly how we will get there, we know we must enter the waters, for a Judaism of justice for all is just on the other side.
